Unemployment and Pensions Protection in Europe: The Changing Role of Social Partners

Poland, just like many other European countries, is facing the important challenge of modernising its welfare system in a challenging economic context and at a time of ongoing fiscal consolidation. Against this background, the question is whether and how the social partners play a role in the development of ‘occupational welfare’.

The latter, which is also referred to as ‘contract welfare’, is a phenomenon that consists in the provision of supplementary welfare benefits through collective bargaining, or unilateral bargaining by employers. The European Commission-funded PROWELFARE project tries to assess the significance of such developments in nine European countries: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

We have the pleasure of hereby inviting you to a Roundtable discussion on the topic that will take place in Warsaw on 6th May 2016. The event represents a key opportunity for researchers as well as national and European stakeholders and policymakers to discuss the contribution of social dialogue to welfare state developments in Poland and other EU Member States. Leading scholars from PROWELFARE research institutes will shed light on the recent developments, challenges and opportunities associated with the development of contract welfare, notably in the reform of unemployment and pensions schemes. See the enclosed programme for further details.

The Roundtable is organized by the Institute of Public Affairs (ISP, Warsaw) and the European Social Observatory (OSE, Brussels).
