Occupational safety and health of residential care workers: collection and review of existing information

This project provides an analysis of working conditions and occupational safety and health (OSH) among staff in the residential care sector in the European Union. It examines the impact of structural factors, such as privatization and staff shortages, on workers’ physical and mental well-being. Based on a literature review and data analysis, the project identifies key risks, including musculoskeletal strain, stress, and burnout, and highlights good practices and innovative strategies to improve quality of working life. The findings contribute to the development of policy recommendations aimed at strengthening worker protection in ageing societies.

The project implementers intend to:
i) identify and analyse risk factors and their health impacts in the residential care sector, including physical, psychosocial, biological, and chemical hazards, as well as assess their effects on workers’ physical and mental health
ii) examine systemic, legal, and structural conditions, including public policies, regulations, funding models, and demographic and technological changes shaping working conditions in the sector
iii) identify, assess, and promote good practices and intervention strategies that reduce occupational risks, support workplace safety, and can be effectively implemented and adapted across residential care organisations.
