Professor Wojciech Sadurski Appointed Member of the Venice Commission


Professor Wojciech Sadurski, Member of the Council of the Institute of Public Affairs, has been appointed as a member of the Venice Commission representing Poland for a four-year term.


The official nomination ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw. Professor Sadurski received his nomination from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski, together with Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek.

The substitute member of the Venice Commission has been appointed Professor Monika Florczak-Wątor of the Jagiellonian University, a distinguished scholar in constitutional law. Professor Florczak-Wątor is also one of the authors of the Institute of Public Affairs’ publication “Democracy in Poland 2024. An Assessment of the Implementation of Commitments from the Reykjavik Declaration Adopted at the 4th Council of Europe Summit in May 2023”, which provides an in-depth analysis of the state of democracy and the rule of law in Poland in light of international commitments.

The Venice Commission, formally known as the European Commission for Democracy through Law, is the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional matters. It brings together independent experts in constitutional and international law who provide opinions on constitutions, legislation, and institutional reforms in member states. The Commission’s opinions play a key role in shaping debates on the rule of law, human rights protection, and democratic standards across Europe.

Professor Wojciech Sadurski is Challis Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Sydney and Professor at the Centre for Europe, University of Warsaw. In the Spring semester of 2026, he serves as Bok Visiting International Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where he teaches and conducts academic seminars. Throughout his career, he has also held visiting professorships at numerous leading law schools in the United States and Europe. He is the author of many books and scholarly articles in the fields of legal philosophy, comparative constitutionalism, and political philosophy.
