EU High Representative and the Commissioner concerned by recent amendments to NGO legislation in Azerbaijan

European Union has called on Azerbaijan to remove barriers to registration of international NGOs in response to the statement issued by the Institute of Public Affairs and PASOS Board and members.

At the end of January 2014 PASOS made an appeal to the EU and the Council of Europe to press the Azerbaijani authorities to cancel regulations, under which NGOs, especially in the fields of democracy and human rights, could be denied registration.

PASOS statement noted the case of an organization that was refused registration following its critical stance on the presidential elections of October 2013.

EU High Representative Catherine Ashton and Commissioner Stefan Fuele have upheld our position and expressed support for the dialogue between the authorities and NGOs, which had led to the partial lifting of the draconian legislation.
