Scientific seminar on the comparative report “An Uncertain Future of Collective Bargaining in Central and Eastern European Countries”

Collective bargaining in Central and Eastern Europe – a chance for a progressive change?

The Adequate Minimum Wages Directive was intended to accelerate socio-economic convergence in the EU, among other things by increasing the coverage of collective agreements. New perspectives are opening up, especially for the region of Central and Eastern Europe, where social dialogue has been less developed until now, with a lower presence of trade unions, employers' organisations and collective agreements coverage.

These hopes may soon be dashed by a ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union, which may undermine the achievements of the directive.

Pending the CJEU's ruling, the Institute of Public Affairs is organising a webinar during which key findings from a unique study of collective bargaining developments in 12 Central and Eastern European countries will be presented. We will discuss the opportunities for improvement in this area and ask ourselves whether the new regulations will change the landscape of collective bargaining or will they remain an unused opportunity?

The report will be commented on by representatives of the academic world and trade unions from the Central and Eastern European region, as well as by representatives of the European Trade Union Confederation and the European Federation of Public Service Unions.
